CLUTCH critical soundbites:

“Four Maryland lifers–road dogs who’ve been grinding since the early Fugazi administration, cranking out  seething admixtures of jam-band chops, careening blues-punk riffs and singer Neil Fallon’s nerdy, piss-taking wiseass lyrics–release their hardest rocking set to date.”

ROLLING STONE, (#10 Rolling Stone “Top 20 Metal Albums,”Dec. 2013)

“Every now and again an album [Earth Rocker] comes along that’s an absolute classic-not just a handful of good tunes and a handful of filler, but a classic from start to finish. Not since Pure Rock Fury and Blast Tyrant has Clutch been so straightforward in their approach. By their own admission, the band found fresh inspiration from touring with Thin Lizzy and Motorhead and it showed in the music and in the colossal riffs of guitarist Tim Sult. “

METAL HAMMER, (#1 Metal Hammer “Album of the Year,” Jan. 2014)

“…bluesy rock, blustery, but impressively precise riffage, beards, and story songs about robots.

–Allison Stewart, REVOLVER (Mar. 2013)

Vocalist Neil Fallon oozes the passion and silver-tongued charm of a fire-and-brimstone preacher on the title track, Sult unleashes scores of timeless Clutch riffs (with a highlight being the irresistible fervor of ‘Unto the Breach’), and bassist Dan Maines lays down a gritty yet silky tone on tracks like ‘Crucial Velocity’ and ‘Mr. Freedom.’ In fact, every song here has its own rhythmic or melodic hallmark, making Earth Rocker a surefire future classic.”

–Billy Brennan, MODERN DRUMMER (Apr. 12, 2013)

Clutch has become a beaming example of perseverance and self-sufficiency for an independent act. …Earth Rocker remains focused on staying tight. …tracks like ‘Unto The Breach’ deliver with force: It’s fast, aggressive, melodic and catchy.”

–Mike Thomas, RELIX (Apr. 2013)

Earth Rocker is Clutch’s hard turn into primal boogie heaviness. The acoustic flourishes, blues songs, and psychedelic forays that shaped Clutch’s past few records are shelved and in their place are hard and barbed riff-driven tunes. …Singer Neil Fallon is a holy rock ’n’ roller celebrating his music’s cathartic release and its history.”

–Scott McLennan, BOSTON GLOBE (Mar. 2013)

Clutch has created one of its best, and most straightforward, albums to date. …Working again with producer Machine, the act stripped away the excess and honed in on the riff-heavy, muscular bar-band rock. …The white-knuckled rocking only slows down once. ‘Gone Cold,’ a subdued existential meditation, signals the end of Side A and works as a palate cleanser from the amplification and distortion. The respite also builds anticipation for the album’s best track, ‘Book, Saddle and Go.’ The band was inspired by recent tour mates, and ’70s hard-rock legends, Thin Lizzy, and here it shows most. The call-and-response hook and gritty riffing are proof Clutch doesn’t need to pander to fans or a major label (Weathermaker Music is owned by the band).”

–Wesley Case, BALTIMORE SUN, (Mar 15, 2013)

Clutch, the hard-touring Maryland band with an endless supply of guitar riffs, is back on the righteous path of heavy rockEarth Rocker is Clutch’s hardest-hitting album in a while, and it’s full of Fallon’s occasionally inscrutable, fantastical sci-fi themes. There are references to Guttenberg, the Large Hadron Collider and the medieval weapon the halberd–and that’s just in one song (‘Unto the Breach’). ‘The Face’ imagines a post-apocalyptic pop culture landscape where rock is dead and electric guitars have been cast into the sea. On ‘Cyborg Bette,’ our rock-star narrator falls for a robot, his ‘latest model’. A welcome return to form.”

–Christopher Weber, SEATTLE TIMES (Mar 18, 2013)

’Earth Rocker’will leave you battered and bruised from the relentless rhythm, vibe and energy. …The record is so UP, so groove ridden that words are not adequate to describe it. There is no filler here. There are no weak moments. There is nothing wasted. There is not a lyric, not a riff, not even a cymbal crash that is out of place.  Clutch are better musicians than most, but they are a much better band than just about everybody (there is a crucial difference). What an album it is.”

–Richard Maw, THE SLUDGELORD, (Mar. 24, 2013)

About Clutch:

CLUTCH – Neil Fallon (Vocals/Guitar), Tim Sult (Guitar), Dan Maines (Bass) and Jean-Paul Gaster (Drums/Percussion) – have been pushing the boundaries of heavy rock including hard rock, blues rock, southern stoner rock and alternative metal since their early beginnings as a DC hardcore group in 1990. The band quickly became known for their relentless touring schedule, playing shows with bands spanning the spectrum from Therapy? to Iron Maiden, from Marilyn Manson to Thin Lizzy, Coheed and Cambria to Motörhead. What has come of it is a cult like fan base. With song content ranging from John Wilkes Booth to Monster Trucks to Greek mythology and government conspiracies, Mr. Fallon and the band have lead their “gear heads” on a surreal journey that is not even close to arriving home. Songs such as “Spacegrass”“Animal Farm”“A Shogun Named Marcus” and “Burning Beard”, all recorded prior to 2005, continue to be fan favorites. With ten studio albums under their belt as well as rarities, live albums and 3 DVDS, Clutch now have their own record label: Weathermaker Music. The first ever Clutch release was a 7” vinyl EP entitled Pitchfork (1991, Inner Journey) which later became Passive Restraints   (1992, Earache /UK, Relativity/USA), a 12” vinyl EP. These independent releases lead to the Clutch major label debut LP, Transnational Speedway League (1993, EastWest), and subsequently Clutch (1995, EastWest), The Elephant Riders (1998, Columbia), and Pure Rock Fury (2001, Atlantic) with the hit radio single “Careful with that Mic…”. In the following years Clutch licensed three albums to Megaforce Records: Live at the Googolplex (2003)Jam Room (2004) and Pitchfork & Lost Needles (2005). The first two of these albums have since been re-issued on the Weathermaker Music label.Slow Hole to China, a collection of rarities was released independently by Clutch in 2003. Full Fathom Five, Video Field Recordings (2008) is the first Clutch live show on a double disc DVD. It is also the first release on Weathermaker Music and was accompanied by a CD release of the same live recordings Full Fathom Five, Audio Field Recordings. A second double disc DVD, entitled Live at the 9:30, was released in 2010. In 2009, Clutch released their first full length studio recording on Weathermaker Music.Strange Cousins from the West was the first Clutch album to have worldwide distribution and it paved the way for all Clutch re- issues, DVD’s, Vinyl and singles to go international. The release was the highest selling record for first week sales for Clutch to date.  Jeremy Hunt directed the video to “50,000 Unstoppable Watts”. View it here. During the time period 2004 to 2007 Clutch released three classic albums, all of which were re-issued on Weathermaker Music between 2010 and 2011. These re-issues come with loads of added material (either in the form of studio tracks, live recordings or videos from the era of the original recordings) and substantially modified new artwork and packaging. From Beale Street to Oblivion (2010),  contained the hit “Electric Worry,”jokingly referred to by LEMMY from Motörhead as “That’s your Ace of Spades…”  Watch it here.  Robot Hive/Exodus (2010). “Burning Beard”, the video for this record, was directed by award winning producer Jeremy Hunt. The video was voted the #4 “Video of the Year” on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. Watch it hereBlast Tyrant (2011). This album featured the track “The Regulator” which was used prominently in the final scene for the mid-season 2 premiere (2012) of the hit American TV show series “The Walking Dead”. Blast Tyrant also included the hit single “The Mob Goes Wild”. The accompanying video was directed by Bam Margera and featured Margera’s Viva La Bam co-stars; Ryan Dunn, Brandon DiCamillo, and Don Vito. Watch it hereClutch released their tenth and latest studio album Earth Rocker March 16, 2013 on Weathermaker Music. The album entered the Billboard Top 200 chart at #15giving the band their highest chart position to date. Earth Rocker reached #1 on the Rock Chart and #4 on iTunes’ overall Top 100 album chart. Earth Rocker was awarded “Album of The Year” by Metal Hammer magazine and garnered a Top 10 spot on Rolling Stone magazine’s “Top 20 Metal Albums of the Year.”  To read more critical accolades, visit: http://msopr.com/files/clutch_accolades_2013.pdf. In the summer of 2014 Weathermaker Music completed the Earth Rocker release cycle with a very special Double Vinyl 12” Picture Disc for collectors and Earth Rocker Deluxe, a 2xCD / DVD set. CD1 of the deluxe version features the original studio recordings with two previously unreleased songs, CD2 is a live version of all ER songs recorded at various stops on the Earth Rocker World Tour during the summer of 2013 and the DVD is a recording of Clutch’s Denver, CO show from (11/14/13). LIONIZE

ROCK, SOUL AND BLUES BAND

SET TO PERFORM ON THE ENTIRE VANS WARPED TOUR 2014

TOUR KICKS OFF ON FRIDAY, JUNE 13 IN HOUSTON, TX

NEW ALBUM

‘JETPACK SOUNDTRACK’

 OUT NOW ON WEATHERMAKER MUSIC

 LIONIZE photo: http://msopr.com/files/shuttle_nose66.jpg

Rock, soul and blues band LIONIZE have just come off a successful European tour with label mates Clutch and are prepared to head back out on the road this Friday, June 13 to perform on the entire VANS WARPED TOUR along with Of Mice and Men, Yellowcard, Echosmith and many more. The group–NATE BERGMAN (vocals/guitar), HENRY UPTON (bass/vocal) and CHRIS BROOKS (keyboards & vocals) and CHASE LAPP (drums)–will be performing all summer long during the tour’s 20th Anniversary trek for all 42 dates.

“It’s an honor to come back to the Vans Warped Tour as alumni for its 20th anniversary summer,” says NATE BERGMAN. “Warped is the longest running American tour and it’s brought some of the most diverse and popular bands from the fringe of popular music to the mainstream. Warped exposes such a wide variety of bands to all of North America for an affordable ticket price year after year. We’ll be the torchbearers of rock music all summer at a festival whose foundations are in punk music. See you out there tomorrow!”

Hailing from Silver Spring, MD–near the Washington, D.C. stomping ground of their hardcore idols—LIONIZE recently released their new album JETPACK SOUNDTRACK on Weathermaker Music, the label owned and operated by Maryland rock group Clutch. Co-produced by Jean-Paul Gaster, drummer of Clutch and Machine (Fall Out Boy, Lamb of God, King Crimson) at the Machine Shop in Belleville, New Jersey, the album finds the group creating an 11-song journey through their multi-faceted musical influences–spanning heavy rock, soul and blues–such as Deep Purple, O. V. Wright, Led Zeppelin and Solomon Burke. The album’s first single “Reality Check” showcases LIONIZE’s precise musicianship; they smoothly shift gears and smack you with a gargantuan hook at an exhilarating pace.  Listen to “Reality Check” here: http://lionizemusic.com.

Check out some critical reaction for LIONIZE:

“With a sound that owes a debt and immediately brings to mind the classic keyboard rock of the legends that are Deep Purple (which can’t be a bad way to start), Maryland based Lionize’s fourth album, Jetpack Soundtrack, gathers together a range of influences from hard rock to blues, soul and even a bit of funk. It’s the organ sound, though, which gives the music that classic feel, yet Nate Bergman’s guitar gives it more variation than a simple hard and heavy rock; the organ and guitar wah wah of opening track ‘Breather’ give a flavor of what to expect from the rest of the album, leaning towards the hard and heavy but with a twist. ‘Electric Reckoning’ contains a catchy chorus amidst some touches that verge on soul and there’s some excellent slide work from Bergman on ‘Replaced By Machines.’ With some no nonsense, no frills hard rock, Lionize show they can deliver on the single, ‘Reality Check,’ and ‘Lazarus Style’.”

–Mike Ainscoe, CLASSIC ROCK U.K., April  2014

“…great things have arrived in the form of a tightly sequenced, beautifully produced collection that deepens the band’s ability to bring weathered hard rock tropes screaming into the present tenses, via an infusion of soul and blues.”

–Jeff Miers, BUFFALO NEWS, March 15, 2014

“Lionize infuses a soulful Southern gospel element into their sound with the inclusion of a stabbing Hammond organ. The keyboards are more than superfluous texture, acting like a second axe. Lyrically, Lionize delves into a world of robotic sci-fi and fantasy. On paper, the symbolism of stiff, heavy cyborgs doesn’t mesh with the fluid basslines, rich vocal harmonies, and snappy drum fills, but Lionize pulls it off on songs such as ‘Replaced with Machines’ and ‘Skynet.’ Album ender ‘Sea of Tranquility’ even bathes in reggae worship.”

–Joshua Bottomley, OUTBURN, (9-out-of 10 stars, April, 2014)

“Mixing ’70s-influenced hard rock with funky grinding dub into a rather intoxicating brew, DC outfit Lionize offers a surprisingly strong departure… guitar textures trade between fuzzy distorted riffs, wet drops of wah wah notes and piercing fret-jumping solos, thick bass and heavy organ create a robust bed of dub-laced grooves, and the tuneful sandpaper-chafed vocals of Nate Bergman wheels over top of it all. Lionize has earned much street cred in their eight-year tenure, serving as touring band for Lee “Scratch” Perry, warming up the stage on tour with such diverse and respected acts as Bad Brains and Galactic, playing both Bonnaroo and the Vans Warped Tour and issuing albums all throughout.”

CREATIVE LOAFING (1/20/14)

“Lionize is a tenacious hard-working band with moxy and talent. Framing themselves within an imaginative palette of groove-heavy drumming, rippling rock riffs, and smatterings of eyebrow raising dub reggae, these elements congeal to form a refreshing addition to the rock lexicon.

–Oscar Jordan, THE ROCK RAG (Los Angeles, CA, March 2014)

“Maryland seems to be a hotbed of musical volcanic activity over the last few years. But for the last 10 years or so, Lionize have been blazing a path of their own with their hard rock and reggae style first shown to me by Bad Brains some 30-plus years ago. I’d say they have become the next ambassadors of those elements I just mentioned.”

–Steve Truglio, AQUARIAN WEEKLY (3/5/14)

“…the Maryland natives deliver a fun set focusing heavily on latest album Jetpack Soundtrack that goes down well in front of a new crowd that quickly packs the venue.  It’s nice to see a rock band featuring hammond organs for something a little different to the norm and in singer/guitarist Nate Bergman they’ve got a frontman with an impressively powerful voice.  It may have taken them 10 years to get over to Europe but hopefully we’ll see them back here again soon.”

–Stuart Patterson, SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM (U.K.), (5/19/2014)

“They may be new to the U.K. scene but five albums into their career and it was no surprise the organ-inspired quartet delivered their debut British show with confidence and aplomb. New album Jetpack Soundtrack is a triumph of 70s-inspired retro goodness with a taste of Cream, shades of Purple and some of the blackest Sabbath underpinning a wildly addictive set. Frontman Nate Bergman knows how to entertain and knows how to belt out a mean riff, but it was ethereal keys man Chris Brooks who stole the support slot show. An old head on young shoulders, his personal quest to bring back the golden age of heavy rock affirmed Lionize’s brazen appeal.

–Simon Rushworth, RUSH ON ROCK, (U.K.), (4/23/2014)

About LIONIZE:

The Maryland-based band LIONIZE formed in 2004, learning to play music by jamming and listening to each other. Now, ten years later, the band has matured into a much more powerful, unit. Whether touring extensively in the past on a limited budget, or playing to 10,000 people at the majestic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, LIONIZE always seems to look for a challenge. Space Pope And The Glass Machine (2008) revealed their affinity for reggae. Destruction Manual (2011) and their last album Superczar And The Vulture (2011) broadened into a more multifaceted musical direction by incorporating rock, soul and blues influences–such as Deep Purple, O. V. Wright, Led Zeppelin and Solomon Burke–that became the proverbial keys for taking the Weathermaker Music machine out for a late night joyride. LIONIZE first supported Clutch in 2006 and they found a shared regard of music as a sacred cultural and intellectual art form, particularly jazz and rock and roll. That bond endeared the younger band to their seasoned patrons. Weathermaker Music–the label established by Clutch–eventually signed the band and the forthcoming JETPACK SOUNDTRACK is their first release of a new artist on the label.

About the VANS WARPED TOUR:

The VANS WARPED TOUR® is well established as America’s premiere music and lifestyle festival of the summer, breaking up-and-coming indie talent as well as both creating and showcasing major established artists since 1995. The nationally-renowned festival is the most eclectic traveling tour and features a diverse array of artists–with hotly tipped acts in every genre from punk, metal and indie to rock, hip-hop, rap, electronic, reggae and pop; as well as a variety of lifestyle attractions for its traditionally low ticket price. The tour has cemented its place in history by bringing punk rock/skate/action sports culture from the underground to the forefront of global youth culture, while at the same time helping those in need and being the first tour to consistently use groundbreaking environmental concepts every year on the road. The Warped Eco Initiatives (WEI) focus on making the tour more environmentally friendly whether it is through eco conscious catering for the artists and crew courtesy of Tada Catering or a solar-powered sound system on the Kevin Says Stage. Further, www.vanswarpedtour.com even showcases public transportation options for every tour date and carpool social media apps as well as exotic eco travel contests. For more information on the tour that Alternative Press readers voted the “Best Tour/Festival” of 2009/2010 and Rolling Stone called “America’s most successful festival” (2005) go to: www.vanswarpedtour.com. Now in its 20th year, the 42-date tour will commence June 13 in Houston, TX and end on August 3 in Denver, CO.

‘JETPACK SOUNDTRACK’

 OUT NOW ON WEATHERMAKER MUSIC

LIONIZE photo: http://msopr.com/files/lionize_band_med_res.JPG

“…great things have arrived in the form of a tightly sequenced, beautifully produced collection that deepens the band’s ability to bring weathered hard rock tropes screaming into the present tenses, via an infusion of soul and blues.”

–Jeff Miers, BUFFALO NEWS, March 15, 2014

As the rock, soul and blues band LIONIZE prepare to head back out on the road in April, the group–NATE BERGMAN (vocals/guitar), HENRY UPTON (bass/vocal) and CHRIS BROOKS (keyboards & vocals), CHASE LAPP (drums)–have announced they’ll perform all summer long on the VANS WARPED TOUR, launching June 13 in Houston, TX.

“We are very excited to return to the Vans Warped Tour as alumni in 2014,” LIONIZE frontman NATHAN BERGMAN states. “With a variety of talented bands and new attractions this year, we are really looking forward to bringing some loud and funky Rock and Roll to the festival.  See you all summer long!”

Hailing from Silver Spring, MD–near the Washington, D.C. stomping ground of their hardcore idols—LIONIZE recently released their new album JETPACK SOUNDTRACK on Weathermaker Music, the label owned and operated by Maryland rock group Clutch. Co-produced by Jean-Paul Gaster, drummer of Clutch, and Machine (Fall Out Boy, Lamb of God, King Crimson) at the Machine Shop in Belleville, New Jersey, the album finds the group creating an 11-song journey through their multi-faceted musical influences–spanning heavy rock, soul and blues–such as Deep Purple, O.

Who is LIONIZE? Watch the following clip where VANS WARPED TOUR founder Kevin Lyman and a group of their peers, introduce the band:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpHCqjPoAGE&feature=youtu.be

Check out what critics are saying so far about LIONIZE:

Lionize infuses a soulful Southern gospel element into their sound with the inclusion of a stabbing Hammond organ.

Lionize is a tenacious hard-working band with moxy and talent.

“[On Jetpack Soundtrack], Deep Purple organ runs and big Southern rock shout-along choruses for its most complete statement so far.”

–Matthew Everett, METRO PULSE (Knoxville, TN, 3/17/14)

“…an unrelenting blast of soulful fury that denies to be constricted to a single specific genre.

–Dan Ursem, MIRROR NEWS (Dearborn, MI, 3/3/14)

“With amps cranked and drums the concert-goers could feel in their chests, Lionize had the audience rocking harder than anticipated for a Thursday evening. Guitarist and lead singer Bergman was at the top of his game, in full control of fuzzed out guitar riffs and a voice that ranged from soulful shouts to bluesy, Black Keys-like vocals. The rest of the band performed excellently as well, and showcased their individual talent as well as their ability to perform as a unit. The performance overall was marked by a level of cohesiveness that only comes with experience, and Lionize has paid its dues.”

–Trent Burns, THE AMERICAN EAGLE, (Washington, DC, 2/24/14)

Lionize is a Maryland-based band that never stops amazing fans with every album released.[ On Jetpack Soundrack,] Lionize’s new funky rock style will make metal lovers stop and take notice.Reality Check’ is the first single released off of ‘JetPack’ and has a hip, upbeat feel with a lively chorus.”

–Krash Kiten, HEAR MAGAZINE (Detroit, MI, 2/13/14)

“On the new record, Lionize’s unique sound leans heavily towards groove-based, funk infused jam-rock reminiscent of old-school Red Hot Chili Peppers-with a twist of organ. Standout tracks include ‘Reality Check,’ a dark and dangerous sounding song driven by alternating guitar and organ hooks, and ‘Replaced by Machines’ which showcases the talent of the band both as a unit and as individual musicians.

Lionize has been playing music together for 10 years now, and they’ve made a point to show that off on their latest album. Jetpack Soundtrack sees the band at their tightest thus far and makes for a cohesivealthough wild–ride through all 11 tracks. RIYL: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, Foxy Shazam.”

–Trent Burns, THE AMERICAN EAGLE (Album review, Washington, DC, 2/20/14)

Jetpack Soundtrack may be their best work to date with added depth, power, and creativity relative to their previous work…Lionize deliver great songs with a mulit-layered invigorating sound.”

–Gideon Thomas, CRYTPICROCK.COM, (3/6/14)

“…with Jetpack Soundtrack, Lionize have developed a style of Jam Band music for a new generation. They take groove-heavy hard rock mix in some dark reggae and add a touch of Clutch sounding stony rock… Jetpack Soundtrack is a solid album from beginning to end.”

Lionize “Jetpack Soundtrack” out today!

LIONIZE

ROCK AND BLUES TRIO PREMIERE NEW ALBUM

‘JETPACK SOUNDTRACK’

AND Q&A WITH FRONTMAN NATE BERGMAN

TODAY ON ARTIST DIRECT

 ‘JETPACK SOUNDTRACK’

OUT TODAY, FEBRUARY 18 ON WEATHERMAKER MUSIC

 LIONIZE photo: http://www.msopr.com/n/client-roster/lionize/?cmd=downloads.

Hailing from Silver Spring, MD–near the Washington, D.C. stomping ground of their hardcore idols–rock, soul and blues trio LIONIZE have unleashed their new album JETPACK SOUNDTRACK today, February 18.  Co-produced by Jean-Paul Gaster, drummer of the rock group Clutch, and Machine (Fall Out Boy, Lamb of God, King Crimson) at the Machine Shop in Belleville, New Jersey, JETPACK SOUNDTRACK has been released on Weathermaker Music, the label owned and operated by Maryland rock group Clutch. Listen to the full album on ArtistDirect today and read the Q&A with LIONIZE frontman NATE BERGMAN here: http://tinyurl.com/matol3v.

On JETPACK SOUNDTRACK, LIONIZE create an 11-song journey through the group’s multi-faceted musical influences–spanning heavy rock, soul and blues–such as Deep Purple, O. V. Wright, Led Zeppelin and Solomon Burke. The album’s first single “Reality Check” showcases LIONIZE’s precise musicianship; they smoothly shift gears and smack you with a gargantuan hook at an exhilarating pace.  Listen to “Reality Check” here: https://soundcloud.com/lionizemusic.

Currently in the midst of their U.S. tour, LIONIZENATE BERGMAN (vocals/guitar), HENRY UPTON (bass/vocal) and CHRIS BROOKS (keyboards & vocals)–will head out for headline shows as well as gigs supporting Clutch and Umphrey’s McGhee before hopping on a major festival this summer to be announced in early March. The current dates for LIONIZE are below.

What were the pivotal albums in your life, growing up?

A few albums shook me to the core growing up Creedence Clearwater Revivals’ Cosmo’s Factory, Led Zeppelin IV, Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks and Moondance, Bob Marley and the Wailers Uprising, Parliament’s Mothership Connection, The Beatles Rubber Soul and Sam Cooke Compilations. The list is too big, but when I was 10-years-old my parents gave me their turntable and speakers and about 200 vinyl albums ranging from Jazz, Classical, Folk and Reggae to Blues and Classic Rock. It was a treasure chest for me–and it’s still the cornerstone of my collection. My musical taste grew out from that point on. I’d hear Led Zeppelin and wonder who their influences were and so forth. That’s when Blues and Jazz comes into play, and where I still spend a lot of dollars of discovery at the record store in those sections.

On JETPACK SOUNDTRACK, you’ve diversified and it’s reflected in the music. It’s a mix of heavy rock, soul and even some blues. What inspired you to keep musically expanding?

At the core of our nature and most of the bands we admire is the need to explore and evolve. The second you’re happy with the sound and what you’re doing it’s the end of creativity and the life of the band. Touring with as many different types of bands as we have, like Steel Pulse, Bad Brains, Clutch–you get a sense of evolution and expansion with those bands from tour to tour and album to album. We are musical sponges in terms of being open by what we’re seeing live and listening to in the van. You wouldn’t believe how deep you get when you tour with a band and begin to share each others’ taste in late night sessions. You get a sense of what turns them on and you can turn them on to what influences you. It’s a continuously growing venture.

What would you like for people to take away from listening to JETPACK SOUNDTRACK?

I can’t decide what they should take away from it–I just hope it takes them somewhere. We wanted to create an interesting sonic journey, and hopefully it’s catchy and fun. I want people to have a good time with it.

LIONIZE is the only artist aside from renowned rockers Clutch signed to Weathermaker Music, describe how that happened.

We have been touring on and off with Clutch for the better part of 7 or 8 years. We’ve gone from very low on the package to direct support, and on a personal and musical level we all get along. We are into the same stuff, and I believe at the end of the day we are similar in our attitude towards music. It’s no nonsense, no glitz or glam. It’s rock and roll and it’s funky and it’s working. We’ve always had an above average work ethic and when we met those guys it was a huge inspiration to see that hard work does pay off. They are the best Rock and Roll band in the world if you ask me. I guess since signing to the label you could think that’s lip service, but we are true Clutch fans and have been long before we even started touring with them. We have worked with Jean Paul Gaster in the studio for years now as well, along with jamming and recording with Tim Sult, who plays guitar on 3 of our previous albums. Over the years the studio work morphed into Jean Paul becoming a significant portion of the recording and pre-production process and finally a true producer on this album. We went in to record the album without the intention of signing to any label at all. We had a few labels we thought about, Weathermaker being at the top of the list, but it wasn’t even on the table-we just wanted to make an incredible record and go from there. No rush, no deadline-just a great album. Clutch and Weathermaker approached us and since they’ve done wonders for promoting Clutch, it was a natural fit. It’s without a doubt the best label experience we’ve ever had and I look forward to doing this for years to come. It’s a family thing to us.

Are there any new artists you’ve heard, that are sticking out?

There’s a few artists that are new to me, but certainly not new–as most bands that have a successful career put in a decade before anyone knows them, but I think some modern bands that get play in the van are Lucero, Ben Nichol’s solo stuff, Foxy Shazam, The Black Clouds, The Sword, Mastodon, Charles Bradley, Willy Tea Taylor, Larry and His Flask… Honestly mostly older artists in general, but we do love those bands. I guess it goes without saying we are enormous Clutch fans, but they’ve been around for a hot minute.

Describe your best night on tour, ever.

Two days come to mind that were incredible. Once we opened for Steel Pulse and Lee “Scratch” Perry at Red Rocks in Denver. It was just a surreal and beautiful experience. The second was an outdoor block party we did in Chicago for the anniversary of Kumas Corner, a famous heavy metal burger joint that shuts down a block or two and has a huge concert outdoors. It was spring time, Chicago, outside. After our set which went great, we listened to Clutch behind the stage and an Ice Cream man shows up on a little push cart. Someone pulled out a twenty and bought everyone backstage ice cream and we sat and enjoyed the music and had a treat. That was a perfect tour day.

What’s the single best piece of advice that you’ve been given?

Good stuff comes from Good Stuff.

What would be your ultimate dream bill?

A great tour would be Lionize and The Black Crowes. Eventually, it can make sense and we would be a nice direct support on that bill.

What has surprised you most in your career, so far?

Almost every single thing about it…

lionize announce release date for “jetpack soundtrack”… new lyric video…pre sale and tour dates.

LIONIZE Announce February 18th Release Date for Jetpack Soundtrack

Pre-Orders Available Now!

LIONIZE, the first independent artist to sign with Weathermaker Music

(the label that has, up until now, served as the exclusive platform for CLUTCH and individual band member related side projects) have confirmed a February 18th 2014 release date for their new album Jetpack Soundtrack.

The album features 11 new tracks and was jointly produced by CLUTCH drummer Jean-Paul Gaster and Machine (Lamb of God, King Crimson) at the Machine Shop in Belleville, New Jersey.

Starting today Jetpack Soundtrack is available for pre-order HERE.  The album is available in LP (limited edition pressing of 1,000), CD and digital formats.  Several fan friendly pre-order bundles are available.

“Reality Check” is the first single from the album. It’s a showcase of LIONIZE’s precise musicianship, smoothly shifting through the gears and coming out the back end at an exhilarating pace. Its gargantuan hook comes at you with an unexpected velocity.  The lyric video for the first single from Jetpack Soundtrack, created by Agent Ogden (Clutch-Live at the 9:30 DVD/ Full Fathom Five DVD) can be viewed at www.lionizemusic.com.  The single is also available to stream via soundcloud at www.lionizemusic.com.

The band will be hitting the road in support of the new album beginning January 10th for a string of headline dates before joining up as direct support for Pepper.  These dates begin January 16th in Agoura Hills, CA and run through February 6th in Santa Ana, CA.  Following the dates with Pepper LIONIZE will play another run of headline shows beginning February 7th in Las Vegas and wrapping up on Valentine’s Day February 21st  in Pittsburgh, PA. A complete list of dates can be found below.

Frontman Nate Bergman spoke on the “State of the Union” of LIONIZE:

“Coming into 2014 is the most exciting point in our careers. We are getting ready to release a record called Jetpack Soundtrack that we’ve labored over for more than a year – and the results are better than we could have expected. We wear the Weathermaker name with a great sense of pride, and we look forward to taking the album and name all over the globe and performing for fans. There’s a level of confidence that comes with being on Clutch’s label – they are simply the best rock band on the planet and are the most supportive group to team up with. Aside from the album being fantastic, we are starting the year off with an incredible tour with headlining dates leading up to a tour with Pepper. They are great dudes and the shows will be immensely fun.”

The Maryland-based band formed in 2004, learning to play music by jamming and listening — really listening — to each other. But now, ten years later, the band has matured into a much more powerful, tight unit. LIONIZE still hammer out most songs in the studio and rehearsal room from the basic spark of an idea. Jetpack Soundtrack, their fifth album and first for the Weathermaker Music label, is no different.
